I have to admit, for a long time I didn’t quite understand what Bruce Lee meant when he would talk about emotional content behind a move.

I could see the abundance of mistakes when people would roll with emotions involved.

My goal has always been to roll without emotion, to remove my cognitive self from the experience. I have always avoided emotions like anger, as they disrupt my breathing and relaxation, and thus my performance. i.e.I took the Jedi Knight approach.

Bruce Lee has always been an inspiration to me, so you can imagine the conflict this quote  caused me. That is until I understood it. What I realized is that Bruce wasn’t talking about emotions like anger or happiness, he is talking about the emotional energy behind movement which comes back to the zen experience of being entirely present in its execution.
